(Melissa odorata)
a.k.a Sweet Balm - Fragrant lemon scented leaves are used in teas and salads. You can start these seeds right on your windowsill to enjoy the aromatic scent everyday.  Butterflies, hummingbirds and many beneficial insects are attracted to the fragrant white flowers and heart shaped leaves.
Lemon balm grows best in rich, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil. Prefers full sun, but will do well in partial shade. Average height is 18-24 inches and as wide. Mulch around base in areas that get below 0 degrees.
To start indoors:  Start your seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost date in your area.

· Use a good seed starting medium such as Jiffy Mix. Fill seed flat with soil. Pre-moisten the soil and scatter the seeds lightly and evenly over the surface. DO NOT COVER. Seeds need light to germinate.

· Place in a warm location and keep moist (not wet) using a fine misting spray. Seeds will germinate in about 7 to 21 days.

· Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.  Space plants at least 12 inches apart in full to part sun.
