BLUE FESCUE GRASS ( Festuca ovina glauca )
An excellent ornamental grass for groundcover with silvery blue foliage that grows in low dense mounds 4-10" high. The mounds do not grow together, they remain as fountain-like tufts. Blue Fescue is not a good lawn grass, but when planted as an accent it contrasts nicely with broad-leafed perennials and Sedums. It retains its silvery-blue color all winter long. In the summer blue purple flower spikes on foot long stems appear and ripen into flat fans of seeds. Cutting back to ground level after flowering helps keep plants from looking shabby. Blue Fescue can grow in full sun, however it is tolerant of some shade. It likes a neutrally based soil, but doesn't have any special requirements. Blue Lily of The Nile - African Lily (Agapanthus africanus blue)
Agapanthus africanus is native to Southern Africa. It is grown for the dark, glossy, strap-shaped leaves. Flowers are borne on long erect stems 3 feet or taller. Agapanthus make good background plants or edging along a fence, driveway, or wall. These plants can thrive on conditions of neglect and naturalize readily. They also make excellent tub and container specimens and can be used in cut flower arrangements. In cold winter areas they can be brought indoors for the winter. Rounded heads of trumpet-shaped, deep blue flowers from July to September held above bold clumps of strap-like, mid-green leaves. These beautiful African lilies provide valuable late summer interest in a sunny, well-drained border or large patio pot. Where temperatures may fall below zero, container grown specimens should be over-wintered in a frost free place.
